Abruzzo is considered the green region of Europe. The region combines some of the highest peaks of the Apennines (Gran Sasso and Majella) with a stunning Adriatic coastline, including the Costa dei Trabocchi. The trabocco is an ancient wooden fishing machine, typical of the Abruzzo coast. Resembling a stilt house, it juts out into the sea with long arms that lower a large net, allowing fishing from land.
The regional capital is L'Aquila, which was partially destroyed by a violent earthquake in 2009 and is currently undergoing restoration.
Abruzzo has a strong food and wine tradition:
olive oil, cured meats, cheese, red and white wines such as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Cerasuolo, Trebbiano, Pecorino, Passerina, and more.
This region offers incredible natural landscapes, enchanting historic towns, medieval villages and a rich heritage of castles, fortified villages, and monasteries. Pescara is a modern and beautiful seaside city, the most populated city in Abruzzo and the region's main economic, commercial, and tourist center.
