Taste Olive Oil, Sangiovese Wine, Learn the Regional Cuisine Exploring the Enchanting Countryside
We will pick you up from your hotel in Bologna at around 2pm and drive South-East from Bologna, towards the Romagna area. Our first stop will be at an olive oil mill for an olive oil tasting. There are few small areas of the region where olive trees grow and the extra virgin olive oil is produced from indigenous varieties of olives and of very high quality, due to its organoleptic characteristics and its low acidity. The area of Brisighella, for example, in the heart of the Romagna area, produces an extra virgin olive oil that was one of the first oils obtaining the DOP (protected denomination of origin) certification in Italy. You will learn how to taste olive oil and how to recognize the real extra virgin olive oil! Then proceed to a winery nearby for a visit and a wine tasting. You will discover and learn about the local indigenous wines, such as Trebbiano, Albana and Sangiovese. And, of course, taste them! After the visit we will drive to a fascinating restaurant located in a very charming and little medieval village built around a beautiful fortified castle in the Romagna hills. Here we will meet chef Daniele for a cooking class on regional specialties. Daniele is very nice, friendly, knowledgeable and he speaks good English, he is a great chef specialized in the Mediterranean cuisine. He will host us in his kitchen and together we will prepare several great recipes traditional of the region.
Dinner will follow at his beautiful restaurant, tasting and enjoying the wonderful foods we have prepared together during the afternoon. Back to Bologna after dinner, after an interesting, informative, enjoyable Foodie's day! |

We cannot express how happy and satisfied we were of our Bluone- 12 Hours in Bologna tour. Raffaella, Marcello and their children were wonderful. We spent 16 days in Italy and this was definitely the main highlight for us! We learned so much about the food, people and culture of the Emilia Romagna Region. The dinner was amazing!! If and when we return this stop will be a priority. Grazie Tori Family. P.s. We stayed at Casatori (their property) which was also above any expectation and a wonderful experience, as well.)

Like so many Italian cities, Bologna has an awful lot to attract the visitor, be it churches, museums, restaurants or miles of porticos. But one lesser known attraction, which is really a "must do", is a day spent with Raffaella and Marcello ( and, if you're lucky, also with their lovely daughter Francesca) learning home cooking a la bolognese. As others have already said, it is a delightful and unusual day spent in the company and home of this charming family, learning how the people of this city source, prepare, cook and eat the wonderful local produce. We never dreamt that we would be making pasta from scratch, rolling it ( endlessly) and then cutting it into little squares from which we fashioned and filled many tortelloni. They even looked like the real thing after a couple of false starts. And, know what? They tasted yummy too when expertly cooked. At the end of the delicious dinner with lots of local wine, Marcello demonstrated the Italian view of hospitality by driving us home, tired but very happy. Truly a day to remember, however sophisticated the traveller might be.
